Initial thoughts on TR2W: Feedback please!

Mission Statement / Relative Wilderness School Vision
For many among us, mental health issues and process are not as glib a "fix" or "solution" as simply counseling and/or medication.  For many suffering from depression, anxiety, loneliness, issues of trauma - to name just a select few - is truly about "Survival Skills."  These sometime chronic and deleterious roadblocks to individual contentment and happiness are insidious and refractory of treatment and thus, at times, Hope.  Without dwelling on the significant rates of mental health related suicides in our communities, it is a reality that many among us face on a daily basis.
The Relative (E=mc2) Wilderness School is an educational program that teaches the basics in bushcraft, wilderness, and survival skills.   These skills, tactics, and techniques stress the importance of Self-reliance. The Relative Wilderness School attempts to emphasize this role of Self-reliance and then generalize this learned process to the effective mental health management of day-to-day struggles.  Simply stated, the self-reliance required in the acquisition of various wilderness skills, tactics, and techniques can combat a host of deleterious mental health issues/emotional problems when used in conjunction.
The belief is that the skills learned in competent wilderness skills and survival are not a physical "constant" and can be applied to urban, day-to-day, mental health issues, hence, making them "relative."  Therefore, if time and space are "relative" and not a constant or fixed construct, then perhaps the wilderness experience that many routinely seek is "relative" as well and can then be applied to urban and mental health issues.
The wilderness prism is indeed relative.  Simply stated, it can be a groomed city park or a primitive wilderness area sanctioned by the federal government.  So, there exists a continuum from an urban wilderness area to a primitive wilderness area untrammeled by man.  Along the continuum lay forests, woods, trails, parks, etc. Thus, given this perspective, wilderness is not fixed, it is truly relative and is not as remote from our daily lives as we may believe.
Treatment is experiential and provides a unique opportunity for personal growth.  Contrary to many therapeutic modalities, I don’t believe you can simply or easily “Think” your way out of it. The Relative Wilderness attempts to elucidate the positive (growth learning) psychological and behavioral aspects of bushcraft, survival and general preparedness.  It then concentrates that growth on how to generalize the aforesaid in daily life (affect, thoughts, behavior).

A great hiking meal for WiOTG

My new favorite. Mix it with some jerky and cheese and you have your protein for the day!

Powdered Whole Eggs #10 Can

I will be ordering my new Hennessy and Maxpedition Vulture II soon. Can't wait to give 'em a try on the Ice Age Trail. Also, still working on the mission statement and a business plan for The Relative Wilderness (E=mc2)! Hope to have a great draft by the end of next week!

Relatively Thankful

This morning on my hike with Charlie the Wonder Dog, I saw a high-end SUV import.  You know the kind, could withstand a tactical nuclear strike and climb Mt Everest...and it's price tag reflects its capabilities!  Anyway, my first usual thought is "here is a 1%'er that will NEVER take this thing off a city street!"  To my surprise the license plate was, "THNKFUL"

Instant respect on my part!!!

It does work!

Here is some evidence of the benefits of wilderness relativity! Being outside and gardening increases happiness. Have not checked the source but at first glance it appears legit! More reason for The Wilderness Relativity School should happen!

If We Must Die...(WiOTG)

Thought I would share with you one of my favorite poems.  It struck a cord with me when I was much younger and experiencing a great deal of trauma and depression.

Claude McKay’s "If We Must Die"

If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accurséd lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O, kinsmen! we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

WiOTG Morale Card

Here are some of the items on my "Morale Cards."  You may recognize some of them, and you may not.  Some are "personal" and make sense to me only.  The concept of morale cards will be included in the Wilderness Relativity School.  I will explain the purpose at a later date...once I have a mission and vision statement completed.

Please share some of your own as well!

The Relative (E=mc2) Wilderness

This is the beginning of my new blog which I am calling The Relative (E=mc2) Wilderness.  It is in the first stages but will be dedicated to the synergistic relationship between mental health and outdoor / wilderness pursuits and activities.  I will attempt to view this relationship through a prism of the theory of relativity, the laws of physics and probability, and the natural laws of the universe.  I believe that these correspond with and provide structure for improved mental health.

Additionally, it will focus on bushcraft, survival, prepping skills, and general preparedness and how these tactics, skills, and techniques can promote well-being, personal growth, and positive mental health.

The following is a terse synopsis of my initial thoughts.  Very extempore, fledgling attempt...
The Relative (E=mc2) Wilderness

Or….
Wilderness Process Consultation, Inc.
Wilderness Relativity2

1)      Wilderness is relative.  It can be a local park or trail.  Continuum from Primitive Wilderness to Urban Wilderness.  With forests, woods, trails, and parks along the continuum.  The wilderness relativity is not fixed.
2)      The self-reliance required in the acquisition of various wilderness bushcraft and survival skills can and do combat a host of deleterious emotional problems (Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Impulse control, etc.) when addressed/learned in conjunction with one another.
3)      Perhaps…Get lost in the Wilderness - use related skills, tactics, and techniques – and find yourself.  Or, find your emotional self-reliance and preparedness skills in addition to your physical skills.
4)      What a BOB/EDC/USK can teach and prepare you for with regard to emotional self reliance and preparedness. Physical items = emotional items for preparedness.  i.e. flint and steel for fire preparation can = Morale cards to spark inspiring thoughts and emotions.
5)      Function and Process is concentrated on over Form and Content.
6)      Reviews for the pragmatic individual concerned with function over form.
7)      Leadership skills?  Ephemeral, cerebral, & esoteric.  Critical thinking & intellectual curiosity.
8)      Einstein quotes…”not everything that counts can be counted…”
9)      Transpersonal Psychology of Wilderness experiential learning.
10)  A unique opportunity for personal growth.
11)  Elucidate the positive (growth leaning) psychological aspects of Bushcraft, Survivalism, and Prepping.  Focus on how to generalize the aforesaid in daily life (Affect, Thoughts, Behavior)
12)  What can we learn from the laws of physics, probability, relativity, etc?
13)  Bushcraft, survival, and preparedness school (non-profit?). +mental health issues, leadership, teamwork, and process consultation skills, 2nd order change.
14)  Loneliness issues also.
15)  OB focus on kids and adolescents. NOLS focus on adult, organizational leadership and teamwork. Combine these pops with MH issues.

LLike I said its all the extempore ramblings of a madman at this point. i hope in time to be able to collect my ideas into a mission/vision statement along with some organizational and programmatic structure. Thanks and any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
